There are some things in life that simply shouldn’t be DIY—and self-adjusting is at the top of that list.
I don’t have many pet peeves, but one that really gets to me is when people pop their own necks or backs. While I understand the appeal—it might provide temporary relief—it’s not actually helping your body function the way it’s designed to.
The Problem with Self-Adjusting
When we take a closer look at how the nervous system and body work, it becomes clear that self-adjusting is no different than taking an over-the-counter medication to mask a symptom. Most people self-adjust because they’re experiencing tension, tightness, or soreness in their muscles—signs that the spine and nervous system are under stress and working harder than they should.
Here’s the issue: that “crack” you feel when you self-adjust isn’t addressing the root cause. A specific chiropractic adjustment is designed to relieve nerve tension, restore proper communication between the brain and body, and support the alignment, motion, and muscle balance of the affected area. Without that precision, you might feel better for a moment, but the underlying issue remains unresolved—and could even worsen over time
The Risks of Self-Adjusting
When we self-adjust—especially on a regular basis—we’re sending mixed signals to the nervous system, essentially telling it that something needs to change. Doing this multiple times a day confuses the nervous system, causing it to shift into a protective mode. This can create more tension and dysfunction throughout the nervous and muscular systems. Over time, this misuse of energy can lead to a host of issues, including:Difficulty adapting to stress
Fatigue
Headaches
Poor digestion
Weakened immune function
Lack of concentration and focus
Hyperactivity
By self-adjusting, the body ends up using excessive energy just to maintain normal posture, leaving less capacity to adapt and thrive.
